Do Not Pursue the Treasures of the World

Mark 8:36 says, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”

We know about Jesus’s temptation in the desert…

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

…and we all heard the tales about the stars in Hollywood and the music industry signing a pact with the devil in order to achieve the highest peaks of fame and fortune.

But be honest: Do you really believe that such things happen? Or do you think it’s just a sort of metaphor for succumbing to materialism and selfishness?
