I hope you enjoy my quick shots where I bring you the best YouTube Shorts and other favorite videos I came across last week. This week, I think I got some really good ones for you.
The Most Important Moment of the Mass
Here is a great one to start, where a younger Fr. Mike Schmitz explains the sacrifice of the Mass. All I can say is, if you feel like you’ve become lukewarm about the Mass or have been more distracted than usual, watch this to renew your passion. And if you’ve never been to a Mass, attend one and immerse yourself in the Great Mystery.
By the way, if you want to treat yourself, this video is part of a longer presentation by Fr. Mike at the National Eucharistic Congress, which you can watch here.
What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Dead?
I would actually rephrase it and say, “What does it mean that God made me in His image and likeness?” Both questions are being answered in this intriguing hand-in-glove analogy presented by a young woman.
Her argument must have gotten through to him because today, the young man she’s talking to is a very successful Christian podcaster.
Why Were So Many Innocents Slaughtered in the Old Testament?
This one’s a biggie. It was actually part of the reason why I left the (Lutheran) church when I was a teenager. Reading about the bloody massacres of unbelievers in the OT and getting no good answers from anyone—not our pastor, nor the leader of our local YMCA—I couldn’t believe that this was the same loving, kind God I had come to adore and worship.
And I listened to Thomas Paine in his book, The Age of Reason, when he said…
When we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the word of God. lt is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my own part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel.
That was it for me. I threw the Bible and the biblical God onto the dungheap of my past and for the next 30+ years turned to New Age spirituality to hunt for the real God, the one I couldn’t find in those pages.
All the more I appreciate this wonderful explanation by a Christian what it all means. Had someone told me this back then, I might have never strayed.
“There’s a Reason He’s Kept You Hidden”
This is a beautiful reminder for young Christian women who haven’t found the love of their life yet and are worried that they may never be able to marry and have kids… but also for women who struggle with self-esteem issues (and who doesn’t from time to time?).
“I’m glad that He’s kept you hidden,” says the male sage to this young podcaster. “Things that are hidden are protected and valued. You’re not in a safe if you’re not worth anything.”
Oof. Let that sink in, girls. This should be your daily reminder that God has a plan for you.
God bless you!
