In October 2006, a lone gunman attacked an Amish school in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, killing five students and injured several more. NPR reported, “The gunman, who seemed prepared for a long standoff with the police, killed himself at the scene.”
It was a great tragedy for the Amish community. But as the world looked on, it got to witness something astonishing: the power of forgiveness. One sociologist even wrote a book about this event.
