When you spoke of the clingers I remembered this video by Father Mark…. Talks about a famous painting of clingers :)

Hi Ms. Shannara!

Watching the video now, but this lady has a Protestant mindset of not praying to Mary or the saints or angels. We are encouraged to have a relationship with our guardian angels, the rosary is a beautiful prayer to our heavenly mother, and the saints are our friends in heaven. She may be born again Christian but she needs to be born again Catholic, not be a generic Christian like the Protestants.

I agree, Valery, but I thought there was still some really good information in this video. It’s too bad that so many Protestants have this anti-Catholic mindset. After the Warning, they’ll realize their error. ;)

Called it, she promoted the NKJ Bible translation at the end :)

O there is def some good info for sure! My issue was mostly with the Protestant mindset, but also with a few other things. I constantly struggle trying to talk about my faith because people see Christians as fanatics, and this lady wasn’t helping our cause (I think) with some of the things she said.

I have a very dear Protestant friend that was such a fanatic, thinking dragon plushie (think shrek pink dragon) was the devil and such. I almost dismissed our friendship because of her level of paranoia, seeing the devil everywhere. Her son eventually turned away from Christianity because he thought it was too much.

Now this lady has some awesome, valid points. But there’s a few good videos on YouTube (I think one was from one of the exorcists) on why Catholics have statues of Jesus and Mary et al. Do we know what they looked like for sure? No but it beats having a hazy mental picture or a prefabricated one made by oneself in one’s mind.

The Harry Potter I’m on the fence about. Might as well include Disney, and I adore Disney (classic Disney anyway) with fairytales and such. Do they have magic? Sure. But the overall themes are good vs evil, which I assume is the same with the potter series (never got into them).

Ditto to fairies. I have a mini fairy garden, not because of paganism, I just like the whimsy of it. Labyrinths also, just a design. I guess balance, or intention, is key.

I’d love to know your thoughts!

I agree that you can overdo it and see the devil in every corner. Though I’ve had so many supernatural encounters with the good, the bad, and the ugly that I think the greater problem is that too many people (even Christians) don’t believe that he exists. They think he’s just some metaphor, like symbolizing the evil in the human psyche, but the truth is, he’s a real person/entity (and so are demons). Smallish demons can attach themselves to people, esp. those dealing with addiction or involved in the occult. I’ve seen them; they look like nasty little goblins; Fr. Ripperger’s calks them “clingers” because they cling to a person; it looks like they’re riding piggyback. When someone has a prolonged “streak of bad luck,” it can be demonic oppression. So by and large, I don’t think you can be too careful.

I was holding on to things from my former marriage; old letters, newspaper articles, etc. I mentioned this to my daughter and she advised tossing them. I didn't toss everything, including but not limited to the divorce document, for example, but...it felt good and necessary to get that stuff out of my new apartment, especially since I recently left Vermont post-flood, and am building a new life in the Greater Boston area. Interesting development: for my upcoming birthday, my dear friend, Steve, a secular Jew recently added to my religious art collection. He calls me his, "hero." LOL

Good morning Shanara! Thank you for this perfect Lenten advice. I have much baggage as well, having spent my life in thrall with everything exotic, esoteric, and eclectic. Some of these mementos may not be as harmless as I think. This should help me sift through my belongings, as well as get to know Mary. I feel I have a block where she is concerned, and it grieves me. My Mom is a Catholic devoted to her, but I’ve always had a blind spot that I must struggle to overcome. I like how you describe it—the Protestant mindset!😁

Thank you again Shanara! God bless you and keep you during this Lenten season!
